The service
Shmia is a desktop app that reads on-screen text aloud. Its standard voices are generated locally on your computer — that text never leaves your machine to be spoken. Optional premium voices and AI summaries are processed through Shmia's servers.
Free plan
• Unlimited listening with all standard (on-device) voices.
• Shortcuts, the selection bubble, the floating player, and listening stats — all included.
• Premium voices and AI summaries require a paid plan (premium voice samples can be previewed free).
Shmia Premium — $19.99/month
• Everything in Free, plus premium voices for up to 3 hours of generated audio per calendar month (resets on the 1st; unused hours don't roll over).
• Up to 40 AI summaries per calendar month.
• When premium hours are used up, reading continues automatically on the standard voices — playback is never blocked.
• Cancel anytime from Settings → Plan & Billing; access continues until the end of the billing period.
Shmia Ultra — $39.99/month
• Everything in Premium, with up to 10 hours of premium-voice audio per calendar month and 40 AI summaries.
Subscribers on earlier Shmia plans ($9.99 or $15/month) keep their price and receive the Premium plan's features.
Fair use
Premium-voice hours and summaries are limited per month as described above; hours are measured as generated audio time. We may adjust limits for abuse, automation, or resale. Subscriptions are billed through Stripe; refunds for the current period are at our discretion.
Privacy
Standard-voice speech happens entirely on-device. Premium-voice and summary requests send the selected text to our server, which passes it to ElevenLabs (voice) or Anthropic (summaries) and streams the result back; we don't store your text. Listening stats shown in the app are stored only on your computer. We keep anonymous usage counters (premium seconds, summary counts) keyed to your license or a machine identifier to enforce plan limits.
